TEHRAN (IQNA) – One way for removing Shirk (polytheism) is paying attention to the comparisons in the Quran between God and others.

Tawheed and Shirk

Such verses in the Quran warn humans about what they are choosing in place of God.

Some of these verses are as follows:

“Is the One who can create equal to the one who cannot create anything? Why, then, will you not consider?” (Verse 17 of Surah An-Nahl)

“Do you worship Ba’al and abandon the Best Creator?” (Verse 125 of Surah Saffat)

“Those whom you invoke, other than Allah, are worshipers like yourselves. Call them, and let them answer you, if what you say is true!” (Verse 194 of Surah Al-A’raf)

“People, listen to this parable: Those whom you worship instead of God do not have the power to create even a fly, even though all of them would come together for the task. If the fly was to snatch something from them they would not be able to rescue it from the fly. How feeble are such worshippers and that which they worship.” (Verse 73 of Surah Hajj)

“(Muhammad), tell them, ‘Seek help from those whom you consider equal to God. They are not able to remove or change your hardships.’” (Verse 56 of Surah Al-Isra)

“You worship idols besides God and you create falsehood. Whatever you worship besides Him cannot provide you with anything for your sustenance. Seek your sustenance from the bounties of God. Worship Him. Give Him thanks. To Him you will all return.” (Verse 17 of Surah Al-Ankabut)

“They (other than God) will not listen to your prayers if you pray to them. Even if they would listen, they would not be able to answer you.” (Verse 14 of Surah Fatir)

“Those who take unbelievers for guides instead of believers, are they seeking might with them? Surely, the Might altogether belongs to Allah.” (Verse 139 of Surah An-Nisa)

“Their worship of such things, in which there is no hope for any benefit, can only harm them. How terrible is such a guardian and companion!” (Verse 13 of Surah Hajj)

“(Muhammad), ask them, ‘Can any of your idols guide you to the Truth?’ Say, ‘Only God guides to the Truth.’ Is the one who guides to the Truth a proper guide or one who himself cannot find guidance unless he is guided (by others)? What is wrong with you that you judge (so unjustly)?” (Verse 35 of Surah Yunus)

Another way of combating Shirk is rectifying and purifying our Niyyah (intention).

Basically, the value of our action and whether or not they are accepted by God highly depend on our Niyyah.

On the Resurrection Day, some people say they did this and that and now should be rewarded but they are told what they did was for presence only.

So one way for staying away from Shirk is for one to do whatever he does with a pure intention and only for the sake of God.

Another way of combatting Shirk is making the most of Salah, prayers and supplications because the words and phrases in them revive the spirit of Tawheed (monotheism) in us.

If we reflect on the meaning of phrases like Allahu Akbar (God is great), Bi Hawlillah (I stand up and sit with the power of God) and Iyya Ka Na’bud (I only worship you and seek help from you), it will help us move on the path of Tawheed.
